I figured this blog will not be complete unless I added this portion on healthy living. The idea was to go beyond the obvious (for example, the immediate savings you get from quitting smoking i.e. the cost of a pack of cigarettes smoked in a day to 365 days = annual savings) and look into associated costs like the benefits of quality of life improvements and other related savings.
Here is some feedback I received on this:
“I would suggest looking at the “future” cost. If someone is healthy, it may seem like they are spending more money upfront, but long term they can work longer or be more productive and then make more money…they aren’t in the health/sick care system
using up those resources, they don’t have to spend money on medication… which even if you have a health plan can be expensive. There are many things that people can do towards a healthier lifestyle that don’t cost money. Like, drink more water, go to sleep earlier, read instead of watch TV, walk (rather than going to a gym), meditate, etc.” Erica B.
“I would definitely say that the cost of keeping fit and healthy is much lower than any potential medical bills that could arise from unhealthy habits – ie. diabetes bills, not to mention loss of eyesight or any limbs. ” Julie E.
There is a whole lot more that can be said on this topic, and I intend to do more research and post more content going forward
